AFTERMATH OF THE STORM

Our book-release weekend has come to a succesful end. The shows went amazing and of course we have a list of mega thank you's!

Thursday ... Thank you to JB and all of Herkimer County Community College for being one of our favorite venues to perform at every semester. Once again an amazing turnout and the energy was loud as always.

Friday ... Thank you to Sand Creek Middle School for welcoming us into your library for an amazing workshop. 56 students showed up to learn more about spoken word from Bamboo MC, Fritz, Eden, B-Nice, and Fascious. That night our show at Valentines went amazing with a warm crowd and one of the most solid poetry sets we've ever produced. Thank you to the Albany Poets, Absolute, and the rest of Dustwun Productions for sharing the stage with us.

Saturday ... Thank you to all who came out to Deity in Brooklyn. Of course our favorite photographer, Jonathan Weiskopf was there to take some amazing pictures throughout the evening, so check out those pictures HERE.

STATEMENT

We are aware that one of our poets, Tracy Soren, has become part of a controversy regarding the cancellation of a panel at the national J Street Conference in Washington. In the organization’s official statement, they claim that in the name of “being critical of the use and abuse of Holocaust imagery and metaphors,” it would be “inappropriate” that they feature poets “whose poetry has used such imagery in the past and might also be offensive to some conference participants.”

We disagree with the censoring of this discussion before it began, and further believe that Ms. Soren has been falsely labeled under this statement, as well as in various media references depicting the session in question as “anti-Israel” or a “poetry slam.” The session, to include non-competitive performance poetry and a panel discussion, was titled “Culture as a Tool for Change,” as seen HERE.

Ms. Soren is a gifted poet, and one sensitive to and proud of her Jewish heritage. She has never used, much less abused Holocaust imagery in her poetry. Her viewpoint on the Arab-Israeli conflict is her own, and admittedly complex, to the point that she has as of yet refrained from participating in that dialogue with her art.

We fully support Ms. Soren in her quest to clarify the current misrepresentations of her beliefs, wherever they might arise.

...AND THE FIRE BURNS OUT TILL NEXT YEAR

So the 2nd Annual Where There's Smoke There's Fire tour has come to an exhausting end. We'd like to first give a huge thank you to all of those who came out to any of the shows these past four nights. We hope you had as much fun as we did up on stage. The four day tour was filled with reunions, hugs, beers, train tracks, haiku death-match, and even a chair being thrown in the audience (Zev?).

Pictures, video, and audio from the tour will be up soon. And a huge thank you goes out to our good friend Spike who came on the tour with us to record all the shows and third-round action. We got a busy week ahead of us with Soundbites around the corner, more info on that in the next few days.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO...

Although April is the official first month of the Intangible Collective, March has been a month that will go down in the history of our organization.

At the 2009 ACUI Collegiate Nationals (better known as CUPSI - College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational), the Intangibles were in full effect! Omni coached the SUNY New Paltz team that also featured members Tracy Soren and Kerri Shaffer to the Semi-Finals! We are beyond proud of them, as the compeition was ridiculous this year and this was the largest college national poetry slam in history.

If that's not enough of an Intangible Takeover...Caroline Rothstein coached the UPenn team to 1st in the Nation, while Kristen Tomanocy coached the SUNY Oneonta team and Bamboo MC and TJ Natole hosted the semi-finals bout.

Oh but that's not it... Sierra DeMulder was named 'Best Female Poet' at College Nationals and also led her team from SUNY Minnesota to Semi-Finals. And THEN, a week later went to the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWPS) where after the first day of bouts she was ranked 6th out of 72 of the best female poets in the world and ended up finishing 25th in the world!

Also, huge congratulations to Omni again who competed this past Friday, March 27 in the Semi-Final Slam at the legendary Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in NYC!
